Özdemir renews call for general compulsory service after youth protests

Özdemir said politicians and society should discuss “a year for society” instead of military conscription. Young people should be able to choose whether to serve in social work, nature or disaster protection, or the Bundeswehr.

Among other incentives, he proposed a free driving licence.
